Australian pop artist ANDY (Andy Cook) just released the "Can't Wait" video, and it's doing exactly what it set out to do: turning locker room tension into text.
The cast is stacked with real queer sports history. Ian Roberts, 61, plays an older coach, decades after becoming the first rugby league player in the world to come out, back in 1995. Mitch Brown, who came out as bisexual last year and became the first AFL player, past or present, to do so publicly, plays ANDY's love interest.
The video leans into the homoeroticism that's always been sitting under the surface of contact sports, imagining what locker rooms could look like if players didn't have to hide who they are.
It's also personal for ANDY. He told the Star Observer he built the track's sound out of his own intimate recordings, layered with football chants and the grunt and physicality of the sport itself.
"For so long around my own relationship with sensuality, there was a lot of shame, heaps of shame," he said. "I was also raised Catholic too. So to have this song out there feels really liberating... it feels beautiful."
